Chris Killip Chris Killip was born on the Isle of Man and produced his first book there "Isle
of Man" with text by John Berger, in 1980. After working as a Freelance Photographer
from 1965, he became a photography committee member for Northern Arts in 1976, The Arts
Council of Great Britain in 1977, and founder member, exhibition curator and advisor at
the Side Gallery, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, and its Director from 1977-79. After photographing
in North-East England he produced, in 1988 "In Flagrante" recognised, along with
Martin Parrs work as some of the most important visual records of living in
80s Britain. Chris is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Henri
Cartier-Bresson Award, Paris. He has exhibited literally all over the world, written
extensively, appeared on radio and television, and been particularly active in curating
many memorable shows. In 1997 new work made at the end of 1996 in the Isle of Man will be
shown at The Manx Museum, Douglas, I.O.M. Since 1994 Chris has been Professor and Chair at
The Department of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University. Workshop History this page updated:
