John Blakemore
For many years John has taught both the
aesthetics and practice of photography to the students at the University of
Derby, a much admired and respected degree course, where he is Reader in
Photography. He holds an MA in film studies, is an external assessor for the
Royal College of Art and in 1998 was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal
Photographic Society. Recipient of numerous Arts Council awards, John’s work
has appeared in many publications and been exhibited all over the world.
Starting as a freelance photographer in 1956, John soon moved through his
personal work, to become England’s leading landscape photographer, then
transferring his unique and elegant photographic style into areas as diverse as
still life, documentary, portraiture and Polaroid colour. He has been involved
in photographing a nuclear waste dumping site in Lincolnshire for the C.P.R.E.
and has featured in the TV programmes Exploring Photography and World
Photography. Spirit of Place was published in 1979. 1991 saw the
publication of Inscape, a major retrospective monograph.. The Stilled
Gaze, based on his Tulip series, was published in November 1994. Recently he
has been making exquisite hand made books, with both B&W and colour
photographs. 2002 sees his first show of colour work.
Beauty in Contemporary Photography
In depth practical and
illuminating exploration of photography - from landscape to still life, fine
printing to bookmaking.
A workshop with John Blakemore is always a
unique experience. John’s breadth of knowledge across photography - art and
craft, as shown in his wondrous prints will be open for examination with this
most generous and accomplished of teachers. There will be a section on
bookmaking, and the group will participate in creating a composite still life
and create a book from individual projects. John’s gentle manner will lead to
an enjoyable discussion of philosophical as well as technical questions. By
working with John this is an occasion to increase your powers of perception and
learn or hone photographic skills.

A practical darkroom weekend. A skill
building course using John’s vast experience and success to arrive at an ‘expressive
print’. By showing his own work and techniques and using participants
materials (bring contact sheets and negatives) the range of possibilities open
to the inventive printmaker will be explored.
