Judy Dater
Judy Dater was born in Hollywood and has been making photographs for 30 years. She has had so many awards, exhibitions and publications that trying to select some is near impossible. She is one of America’s foremost photographers, with an international reputation for her uniquely perceptive portraits of women and confrontational photographs of the nude. Recently she has been working in Italy photographing Roman Statues and contemporary Italians - the results are amazing! Judy Dater : Twenty Years 1986 Body and Soul : Ten American Women 1988, Imogen Cunningham: A Portrait 1979, Women and Other Visions 1976, Women & Other Visions 1975, are just some of her publications.
Workshop History
Finding a cast of characters with one of America’s foremost photographers.
Who and what turns you on, thrills you, disturbs, intrigues and excites you? This is the visual raw material that will allow your imagination to open and will produce the most rewarding photographs. These "turn ons" can be challenging, even frightening, but worth pursuing. Here lies the path towards expressing your own visual voice. This workshop will be a vehicle for exploring your personal choices of subject and style. There will be group field trips, critiques, exposure to other master photographers’ methods and darkroom sessions. Students working singly or in small groups will be encouraged to seek out their own subjects. There will be instruction on how to approach strangers and gain their confidence. There will be information and demonstrations on composition, backgrounds and finding the ‘right light’. Our time will be spent in critique of fieldwork, slide lectures and the viewing of historically important work by photographers who work with people. Instruction on sequencing, editing and preparing work for exhibition will be covered. Please bring a portfolio of prints or slides with you. All formats of camera are acceptable.

is one thing to photograph people. It is another to make others care about
them by revealing the core of their humanness."
