Michael Pinsky
Michael Pinsky
An important hands-on opportunity for artists to use new technology to intervene within rural and urban public spaces.
|
|
Using the Bridgwater Carnival as a starting point, 12 participants will work intensively to explore the issues, approaches and technology associated with producing and projecting digital work. Though the Somerset Carnivals have a long tradition, this workshop will be anything but!
Michael Pinsky will be working with up to 12
people using still and moving images in a public environment. This event will not only provide source material for the workshop, but raises issues around the whole debate of showing work in public spaces - what is the definition of a public space? Beyond the town square, moving parades, web and virtual spaces on the net, infiltration of other public buildings and the traditional gallery….. |
|
Michael Pinsky who will be leading the course has been using both new and traditional technologies for many years to explore architectural space and perceptions of time. And is one of the most exciting artists working across mixed photographic and new media in Britain today. |
His most recent projects include; 'Transparent Room', a site-specific video installation which was shown at a number of venues including Leeds City Art Gallery and Watershed, Bristol, and 'Overload' an installation first exhibited in Weimar, Germany and developed during residencies at the Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), Germany and the Ecole d'Art d'Aix-En Provence, France. His work has been featured by publications such as The Guardian and Creative Camera. Michael has undertaken many site-specific works, including a recent event in an inland port involving sound installations; large scale video projections and a choreographed dance with two huge cranes! Extremely active, this year Michael has undertaken temporary installations in a swimming pool, tube station and swing bridge and is currently developing a 3 dimensional mapping system of London with the ICA and V2 in Rotterdam. |

‘Breakthrough’ is part of Michael’s work with the ‘Sensing the Land’ project, a new lottery funded arts programme developed by the River Parrett Trail Partnership, to reinvigorate this local trail after foot and mouth disease, increase access to the trail and to work in new ways with artists and technology.

Bridgwater Docks, 5 miles from Duckspool, has provided the setting for two ambitious projects. Michael was commissioned to create a 'sound and light event' over a number of evenings in early May and a permanent work for the site for September. Included in the commission is a professional development programme for local artists.

This course and seminar have been developed in partnership with Duckspool, Bridgwater Arts Centre and Somerset Film and Video with financial assistance from South West Arts through the Regional Arts Lottery Programme and British Waterways. |
|
While the workshop will
incorporate all the long held high standards that Duckspool is renowned for
(sic), the inclusion of new partners means that we can keep the price down
to a stunningly low £300 per person for a fully inclusive 5 day residential
workshop.
|
|
The Breakthrough Seminar, will be held at Bridgwater Arts Centre on the afternoon of the Tuesday 12th November from 2pm to 5pm. Work made on the workshop will be shown, and issues arising from it aired. The seminar is open to the public and is free.
