Paul Wombell has been a leading figure in British contemporary photography for the last fifteen years. In 1994 he was appointed Director of The Photographers' Gallery, London., the first public space for Photography in Britain. He was instrumental in developing the new international prize for photography, the Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize. Previous to this post he was for eight years the Director of Impressions Gallery in York. Here he curated international touring exhibitions on subjects such as football, new technology, British contemporary photography and science.
He has written widely on photography including three books and has given lectures at many international conferences. He has been a member of many national and international advisory boards and committees including the Arts Council of England and the Netherlands Foto Instituut. Most recently he undertook a visit to Australia on behalf of the British Council to review the cultural links between the two countries.
During his tenure at The Photographers' Gallery, Paul has introduced a new programming direction which encompasses a wide interpretation of photography that includes fine art, new technology, photo-journalism, documentary photography and innovative educational projects. This extended seminar will cover approaches to getting work seen by the public, curators and buyers, as well as tracing the development of the photograph and its contemporary siblings as art objects. An informal weekend for all looking for insights into what makes photography tick, and getting it out of the box!
