Jane Prophet is a British artist working
with video and digital media.
After graduating from Sheffield Hallam University in 1987, where she studied Fine Art, she
went on to complete an MA in Electronic Graphics at Coventry University. Her interest in
digital systems and artists' use of computer imaging became the focus of a PhD at Warwick
University.
Jane is a lecturer in Fine Art at the Slade School of Art. She uses new media technologies
in the production of internet sites, CD-ROMs and large scale interactive installations.
The award winning website, TechnoSphere, reflects her interest in landscape and
artificial life. Installations like Swarm and Sarcophagus are object-based
and though interactive, avoid the mouse and screen as an interface, focussing instead on
the movement and actions of the audience.
She is currently completing an artwork on a CD-ROM, The Internal Organs of a Cyborg
which uses the format of the sci-fi graphic as a vehicle for exploring, with humour, the
socio-economics of the cyborg.
Seeing Janes projects in real and virtual space and demonstrating the skills she has acquired to realise them will only be one strand of this intriguing workshop. Bring with you ideas or outlines for projects - even ones that seem impossible and we will discuss ways of realising them, and with practical exercises, guide you through the intricacies of Arts Council or Lottery funding applications, with many examples from Janes successful history! Whilst youll learn quite a bit about the physicality of contemporary exhibiting, theres also the virtual worlds of PhotoShop for image manipulation, Director, and 3D animation for multimedia authoring, and Web writing programs. Then, by reference to examples (usually hidden by applicants), youll also demystify the often felt terror of pitching for and costing exhibitions. When you leave the workshop you should be armed with the skills to both get funding for, and get, new work on the road or on the internet superhighway.
