Lewis Baltz at Duckspool

Turnabout: Lewis Baltz and Slavica Perkovic at Duckspool November 1998

Many photographers who enjoy ‘deconstructing’ both good food and photography have attended the workshops run by Peter and Sue Goldfield at Duckspool. Attending a good workshop focuses your concentration and refines ideas, introducing approaches which otherwise might not have been considered. They always bring together a diverse group of people (from a biochemist to a nurse on this occasion) encouraging learning in an informal atmosphere from leading photographers and the other participants. This is crucial in overcoming isolation (especially for those who wouldn’t join any club which would have them) and building confidence. Some photographers find themselves totally rethinking what they are doing! Not everyone experiences changes this dramatic, but no one’s work remains untouched. This is as true for the old hands as it is for the novices (the old hands can have more bad habits and preconceptions to get rid of!)

Work shown on this workshop included everything from handmade books to Iris prints and the photographers’ approaches to their chosen subject matter were equally varied.
Contemporary concerns such the relationship between humanity and the landscape and the nature of news imagery were touched on and chewed over.
The workshop I attended was entitled Turnabout and the work shown by Lewis Baltz and Slavica Perkovic certainly reflected this.
Most people will know Lewis Baltz as one of the "New Topographics", but his more recent work has taken a radically new direction. If you are looking for a challenging workshop, which may well cause you to totally rethink what you are doing, then this one should not be missed (it will be running again in November 1999). Although wondering what I had let myself in for (I initially hated the New Topographics when I first saw their work) I found the workshop very stimulating. The comments made about my work were helpful and constructive. Not bad going for a Minor White fan! (Minor White is not Lewis’s favourite photographer….) And black and white lives!

I’d come on this workshop hoping to consider changing perceptions of reality and possible new directions that my work might take and I wasn’t disappointed.
The legendary Duckspool rapping sessions are a vital part of any workshop there. Topics discussed included Bill Clinton, Macs Vs PCs, the education system and the existence of God.. The jury is still out on the last and possibly also the first of these. Coming to Duckspool provides food for both the body and the soul (assuming, of course, that the soul really exists).

To misquote Minor White, when the man mirrors the food and the food mirrors the man, something might take over. This year’s workshop line-up includes many new faces such as Greg Lucas, Paul Wombell (Director of the Photographers Gallery), Keith Arnatt and Nick Waplington alongside the regulars such as Paul Hill, Eamonn McCabe and Fay Godwin. Carpe Diem!
