Lewis Baltz and Slavica Perkovic
Coming to prominence as part of the ‘New
Topographic’ movement of the late 70’s, Lewis’s dispassionate,
unsentimentalised eye produced books and exhibitions such as; The New
Industrial Parks, Nevada, the seminal Park City, and culminating in San
Quentin Point and Candlestick Point. These works had an enormous
influence on a generation of photographers trying to define both objectivity and
the role of the artist in photographs. Lewis’s curriculum vitae now looks like
a denial of those works, with selected exhibitions, articles, texts and public
collections only listed since 1990. Works such as Night Cities, the
trilogy of Ronde de Nuit, Docile Bodies and The Politics of Bacteria,
Rule without Exception was published in 1991. The story, The Deaths in
Newport - produced as exhibition, book and CD-Rom in 1995. Exhibitions in
1999 include: The American Century, Whitney Museum , New York. Photographie
als Ruine, Kunsthalle Krems, Austria. The Promise of Photography,
Centre Nationale de la Photographie, Paris. La Ville, Le Jardin, La Memoire:
Academie de France á Rome, Villa Medici. Changement d’Air, Musee d’Art
Moderne Lille Metropole. Views from the End of the World, Marlborough
Gallery, New York.
Lewis Baltz is currently the Visiting Professor at the Hochschule fur Gestaltung,
Offenbach-am-Main, Germany
But it is still the same critical, enlightened
spirit, a changed standpoint and methodology maybe, but with a consistent
attitude, now not only connected to his head, but also to his heart! As Urs
Stahel states in the introduction to Lewis’s work in Photography after
Photography, "on the one side there are those who stand and look on
aghast, sadness in one eye, anger in the other... and on the other side are
those who ride with him in the lift or on the roller coaster..."
Slavica
Perkovic’s work mirrors contemporary issues and has been displayed in public
places causing controversy by emulating conventional advertising in placement
but offering an alternative content.
Exhibitions include: 1998, Histories ,
St. Petri du Lubeck, Germany. 1999, Boys N Girls, Edda
Birman Kunst, Berlin. 1999 UNDER/EXPOSED, public project for the
Stockholm Metro. La Ville, Le Jardin, La Memoire: Academie de France á
Rome, Villa Medici.
Workshop History
Reconsider what you thought
about photography, art, the universe and everything and especially contemporary
art practice at ‘the edge’.
Get up to scratch with what’s happening in
Photography and where your own practice fits in. Work with one of the most
exciting and knowledgeable photographers in the world. While in no way
dismissing his hugely successful early career, we will discuss Lewis’s
assertion that "the only edge is the cutting edge!" and relate your
practice to his personal change from cool ‘New Topographer’ of the 70’s
and 80’s, to the ‘Post Photographic’ passionate storyteller, of the 90’s!
(with his partner, Slavica). Essential workshop with one of the really nice
guys, who can explain lucidly the turnabouts in our perception of reality.
